Police ban Tsvangirai’s Harare rally

POLICE in Harare have banned Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s final star rally which had been set for Monday in Harare, stoking fresh tensions in an already volatile electoral environment. Dubbed ‘Cross Over’, the rally had been planned for an open space in Harare’s Rotten Row area.

In a letter addressed to Godfrey Koster, MDC-T national coordinator, Chief Superintendent Titus Alex Chagwedera, who is officer commanding police in Harare central district, said the ZRP was short-staffed and could not muster enough security deployments for the rally.

“Your letter in which you indicated your party’s intention to hold a star rally at an open space opposite rainbow towers, Harare on the 29th July, 2013 from 1000 hours to 1600 hours is pertinent,” read the letter, dated July 26, 2013.

“Be advised that we have already deployed all our personnel to polling stations where they are securing election and government materials. We have no extra personnel to spare so that they cover your intended rally. Some of our personnel have been deployed to some other provinces to augment the strength of such provinces. “In view of the foregoing, holding the intended Star Rally has not been sanctioned and should not be allowed to take place as the absence of Police officers from the rally may culminate in political violence.”

The ban invited an angry reaction from the MDC-T which has vowed to challenge the embargo in court, insisting the police action was unlawful. “We get shocked when some people say this country is having a free and fair election. What rubbish! This election is illegitimate, is illegal, is unfree, is immoral, is unfair,” MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti said at a party press briefing Saturday.

“We have already instructed our lawyers to go to court. We are also going to write to our observers.”

Meanwhile, Tsvangirai was also barred from using Pfupajena Stadium in Chegutu, forcing the MDC-T to stage the rally at an open space used as a dumping site nearly a kilometre away from the stadium. Administrators in the town – part of Mugabe’s homeland - said the venue had been booked for a Zanu PF sports and musical gala, where popular Harare musician Jah Prayzah was among the entertainers.

At number 172 is Deputy Intelligence Officer Farai Machekanyanga. Last year a ZANU PF official known as Chikanya, from Cherutombo suburb in Marondera, stunned the community after she began confessing how she and a gang, which included Machekanyanga, assassinated suspected MDC-T supporters and dumped their dead bodies in shallow graves and dams. Mugabe's CIO's from the Close Protection Unit (CPU) protect him from protestors. Chikanya, dressed in ZANU PF regalia, had gone to her party offices and told them she wanted to confess her crimes because she was experiencing hardships.
