Mugabe a puppet of the
military: Tsvangirai
MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai claimed Sunday that
President Robert Mugabe was a puppet of the military, adding it was a travesty
that a man nearly 90 years old and in office for three decades wanted another
five years as the country’s leader. The premier was addressing thousands of
supporters at Chitungwiza’s Chibuku Stadium ahead of Wednesday’s key elections
which will replace his power sharing administration with Mugabe. Tsvangirai
said the vote presented Zimbabweans with a chance to “express their choice
between a brutal regime and a peaceful, caring and democratic government”. He
claimed that Mugabe had refused to relinquish power despite “being defeated by
the MDC in the 2002, 2005 and 2008 elections” because he was a puppet of the
country’s powerful security services.
A failure to manage its succession politics,
Tsvangirai added, had resulted in Zanu PF being “stuck with an octogenarian
whose capacity to run the affairs of this country have become questionable”. Mugabe,
who turned 89 this, has run the country since independence in 1980 and his Zanu
PF party for even longer.
Tsvangirai said, if elected on Wednesday, he would not
“overstay” in power but would pass the button on at appropriate time to
“younger and upcoming politicians within the file and rank of the MDC”. “Overstaying
in power is not part of my philosophy, when the time for me to leave comes, I
will hand over power to someone else in accordance to our constitution,” he
said.
He again took a swipe at the Zimbabwe Electoral
Commission (ZEC) accusing the organization of “shifting goal posts” regarding
the management of Wednesday’s vote adding he would register his reservations
with the observer teams. “On Thursday we will go straight into the programme of
rebuilding Zimbabwe, we will not pursue a retributive agenda but focus on
issues that affect the people of Zimbabwe,” he said. He also pledged to reopen
closed industries in the town, address its water and sewer problems as well as
root out corruption.
"Zanu PF has all along condoned corruption within
its rank and file, but we in the MDC have a Zero tolerance on corruption. We
fired all corrupt councillors of Chitungwiza but who retained them? it was
(local government minister Ignatius) Chombo of Zanu PF,” he said.
